Smith welcomes new courthouse opening

19 November 2010

Nelson MP Nick Smith is delighted the upgrade of the Nelson courthouse is complete and ready for the formal opening today by Minister for Courts, Georgina te Heuheu.

“These new courtrooms represent a $10.3 million investment in improved justice services for Nelson,” Dr Smith said. “It’s about our courthouse catching up with 30 years of Nelson’s population growth, improving the safety of judges and court participants, and making our court facilities more efficient.

“This upgrade effectively doubles the capacity of Nelson’s courthouse. We’ll have two jury courtrooms rather than one, three general courtrooms rather than two, 10 interview rooms rather than six, as well as a dedicated family courtroom and two new mediation rooms.

“Courtroom space has been a limiting factor in progressing trials in a timely way. Delayed justice comes at a high economic and social cost for all concerned. There will be a real benefit in now being able to deliver more timely justice.

“It has made good economic sense to progress this project over the last 18 months during the building lull. This has helped secure the upgrade at best price for the taxpayer and has helped keep builders employed during the recession.

“I have been lobbying with the Nelson District Law Society to have this project completed since 2003. It is great to see it completed under budget and on time. Nelson will welcome the improved court services.”
