Smith welcomes $400,000 for Saxton pavilion

13 December 2010

The $400,000 grant from the Lottery Community Facilities Fund for the new pavilion at Saxton Field for athletics and cricket is a significant and welcome boost for the Nelson region, Nelson MP Nick Smith said today following the announcement by Internal Affairs Minister Hon Nathan Guy.

"This is tremendous news for cricket and athletics, for ratepayers, and for the building industry.  It was a big call for Nelson Cricket and Athletics to relocate from Trafalgar Park to Saxton Field, but with this new pavilion facilities will be first class.  This contribution also takes the pressure off Nelson and Tasman ratepayers who have invested millions in the Saxton complex and would otherwise be asked to help fund this $400,000.

"This funding will also help the recovery of Nelson's building industry after the recessionary lull over the past three years by giving the councils, Nelson Cricket, and Nelson Athletics the confidence to proceed with this $3.8 million project.

"Saxton Field is developing into one of the best multi-sport venues in New Zealand.  It is a huge credit to the sporting clubs and councils who are helping to make it happen.  I give particular credit to Nelson Cricket and Nelson Athletics for the way they have worked together to advance this pavilion.

"My ambition is for Nelson to be able to host regular international cricket matches over summer at Saxton to provide a boost for the sport as well the Nelson economy. The pitch has proved to be first class and this grant for the pavilion would bring the associated facilities to the same standard. This is an important step in achieving this goal," Dr Smith concluded.
