Nelson MP Nick Smith has welcomed the announcement by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard that they accepted the decision of the World Trade Organisation on New Zealand apple access and would move to promptly implement the practical arrangements to allow exports.
“It is great news for Nelson apple growers that this Trans-Tasman dispute that has spanned 90 years is finally resolved and that the Australian Prime Minister has committed to prompt implementation,” Dr Smith said.
“Nelson apple growers have not had good returns and are under significant financial pressure. This decision should enable practical market access in 2012 opening up a market of 25 million people. It is estimated to be worth $10 million a year to the Nelson economy and it is a huge opportunity.
“The challenge ahead for Nelson apple growers and exporters is to enter the Australian market in a responsible and disciplined way. This is not about a quick buck but rather about building a reputation for quality New Zealand apples at an affordable price and growing the quite low current Australian apple consumption.”
