Nelson MP Nick Smith has welcomed recognition of Victory Village for its "Community of the Year "Award.

"This is fantastic news for a community that has worked hard for a decade on improving its education, health and social services, and sense of community.

"It is also a stunning example of how a school can integrate itself into its community helping families and thus children beyond the school gate.

"I was privileged to work with Victory a decade ago on getting a social worker attached to the school but this was just one of dozens of initiatives that has made a difference.

"The credit for this award belongs to key players like Victory Principal Mark Brown, Kindra Douglas, Helen Watson, Trish Moir, Mike Hindmarsh, and former community constable John O’Donovan, although many others have also contributed.

"I will be writing to these players to commend them on their achievement and also look forward to meeting them next week to congratulate them."
